I was raised on hot chocolate from a package — Swiss Miss, hot water, and freeze-dried marshmallows. Once I tried a high-quality cocoa powder from Penzeys Spices, there was no going back. Now there are hundreds of drinkable chocolate mixes out there, so don’t feel limited. Choose a brand that’s rich enough for baking and for hot chocolate. Check out 101Cookbooks for an extensive list of the best drinkable chocolates and a great explanation about the difference between hot cocoa and drinking chocolates.
Recipe for Cinnamon Lover’s Hot Chocolate:
1 tablespoon Penzeys Hot Chocolate Mix
1 teaspoon natural high fat cocoa (richest grade of cocoa)
1 cup skim plus milk (my favorite skim milk)
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 cinnamon sticks
1 additional cinnamon sticks for garnish (optional)
Bring milk and 2 cinnamon sticks to simmer in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add chocolate mix and cocoa and whisk until melted and smooth. Discard cinnamon sticks. Ladle hot chocolate into a glass or mug. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Garnish with an additional cinnamon sticks. Enjoy!
